In the summer of 1996, Yapı Kredi Insurance embarked on a long-term program in support of the arts. The Yapı Kredi Insurance Art Activities program contributes to the arts in various parts of the country in a variety of ways, from being direct organization, through sponsorship to providing material support.

Yapı Kredi Insurance Afife Theatre Awards is the first step and flagship event within the framework of this program. This award, through recognizing individual achievement in theatrical performance, promotes respect for the Turkish theatre. The awards are given in the name of Afife Jale, who unfortunately could not benefit from such an award in her lifetime though she richly deserved it as the first Turkish woman to take to the theatre stage. As such, she is the inspiration for these awards.
