Halk Insurance, the forerunner of Yapı
Kredi Insurance, was founded in 1943. The company remained relatively
small until 1972, when Yapı Kredi Bank, a member of the Doğuş Group,
bought a 75 per cent share of the company. In the early 1980s, Çukurova
Group acquired Yapı Kredi Bank and, through that acquisition, took
over Halk Insurance. On 19 October 1994, Halk Insurance was floated
on the Istanbul Stock Exchange and in 2000 was renamed Yapı Kredi
Insurance. Today, 33.69% of the company is publicly owned and traded.
Yapı
Kredi Yaşam Sigorta A.Ş. (Yapı Kredi Life Insurance), a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Yapı Kredi Insurance, was founded in 1990 to assume
Yapı Kredi Insurance’s health and life insurance operations from
then onwards.
This transfer of operations became necessary because of new legislation
requiring the separation of health and life insurance operations
from other insurance areas.
2000 was a year of changes as Yapı Kredi Insurance
prepared for structural reorganisation necessitated by forthcoming
legislation. The Individual Retirement Bill, which parliamentary
sub-commissions
were discussing in late 2000, contained a clause stipulating that
life-onlyinsurance companies, and no other companies, could set
up individual retirement funds. To ensure our Group could meet this
requirement and offer individual retirement pensions, Yapı Kredi
Life Insurance ceded its health branch operations to Yapı Kredi Insurance.
Yapı Kredi Insurance ensured it maintained Yapı Kredi Life Insurance’s
high quality of service in the health branch by completing its preparations
in 2000. This exchange went into effect on 1 January 2001, thereby
allowing Yapı Kredi Life Insurance to offer individual retirement
pensions under the terms of the legislation.
